25 Juli 2007 | Turkije, Diyarbakır

Wednesday 25 July (Day 19) Miroglu Hotel, Diyarbakir, Turkey, 169/6297 km
Breakfast was late this morning. There was no aircon or fan in the room. Despite the height (1600m) it was hot and as a result most of us did not sleep too well. So Rudy and Bernard took an early morning swim in the very cold swimming pool to wake up and start the day. After that Rudy was sitting at a table outside in the shade working on the internet with the portable to bring you the latest developments. Breakfast was also served outside in the shade and at 10:30 it was off, after having said goodbye to the Dutch family (the boys had a great time playing the gameboy together), the archeologist and the owner. It was down the mountain to the ferry to cross the man made reservoir and follow the road to Diyarbakir. It was a short 169 km day. We entered the town through one of the gates in the large basalt defense wall and then drove all around the inside of the wall till we were back at the starting point. The wall is mostly complete but not all in one piece. We drove again asking the way to the famous Deliller Han (an old caravanserai), which has been converted into a hotel. They did not have a 4 people room and 2 separate rooms were a bit above our budget so we went on searching for another place. Jamaliah was feeling bad by this time, so we were keen to find one quickly, which we did just outside the inner city walls. It was then off to bed for her and back to the play station/video’s for the boys. Rudy took the opportunity to walk back into town and crisscross the center and walk partly along the walls. The town actually has 2 old caravanserai. The one in the center is being restored and is partly used as a gold souk. The other is the hotel we tried to get in and where Rudy stopped for tea. There is also an old mosque in town but it was not impressive. The streets and covered souk are nice and Rudy managed to find a barber to shave off his beard. Communication was in sign language. Coming back to the hotel the situation had not changed with both Jamaliah and the boys so he let them rest till 8:30 when we set out to find a restaurant. There was a Burger King nearby so, after all the Arab/Turkish food there was no argument. Finally junk food. To solve the beer problem Rudy bought a few at the supermarket next door.
P/S: In yesterday and the hotel we are now in, surprisingly, we were able to use our wireless internet connection, which make updating the website much easier. Hopefully this will be the case for the rest of the holiday.

    Daan:

Good old Diyarbakir, looks like modern times have arrived here! 20 years ago we had once a week a delivery of chocolate, and for the rest nothing. Sweet memories...
Hope that Jamaliah will feel soon better.
On the television they are showing the high temperatures in Turkey and Greece up to 46 degree C,

drive safe, enjoy the Turkish hospitality Daan

    Saliha:

Baik sudah sikit Bikoh? Kasian, inda bawa lemsip. Aku makan saja di sini ani, mana asal makan kana panggil and in between pun kunyah2. Em and I still recovering a bit from jet lag, I slept the first day at 5 a.m. and the next day slept early and woke up at 2.30 in the morning. Theo and Norani are here now, they arrived yesterday. We are thinking of going to Sabah on the 1st of August.
Re the parents' wedding anniversary, had a hard time persuading father to go to a restaurant, (you know how he hates leaving the house) finally managed to break his resistance after telling him we are going to a nearby place (the plan was to go to the Empire or something posh like that). Further detail will be told when you are in Holland.
Het is hier heet, alleen regen bijna iedere avond, balen voor de verjaardags feest van de Sultan. Groetjes van ons allemaal.

Rudy

We are a family of 4. Rudy Welling was a Principal Production Technologist with Shell/NAM's offshore team. He first went on sabbatical from April 2014 to April 2016. In that period he made a return trip to Vladivostok with his wife, Jamaliah, in camper Passepartout. This was followed by trips to New Zealand and Spain. In April 2016 Rudy re-joined NAM/Shell again in Assen for a year and then retired in May 2017 after 37 years with Shell. He and his family have spent some 21 years in various Shell locations around the world (NL, UK, Brunei, NL, USA, Nigeria, Oman, NL). Jamaliah Jaja is the Manager of the house and comes from Brunei. Anton (1993) studies Business IT in Groningen Bernard (1994) studies Mechatronics also in Groningen Both boys still live at home, but will have to run the household on their own when we start our trip. Our previous trip by car (Volkswagen Passat Station) was from Oman to Holland in 2007. Rudi's great plan is to travel with his wife in a camper around the world. The trips will be in steps. The first is from Amsterdam to Vladivostok. De second from Tierra Del Fuego in Argentina over the PANAM highway to Prudo Bay in Alaska. Australia and New Zealand will be separate side trips and Africa will either be done out and back from Amsterdam or just from the Cap to Amsterdam. Now as K/O of Rudi's retirement we are making this second step on a journey around the world. We hope you will enjoy our story Rudy & Jamaliah
