08 Juli 2007 | Saudi Arabië, Ad Dammām

Sunday 8 July (Day 2) Boudl Hotel Suits, Damman, Saudi Arabia 569/1283 km

We still have to work a bit on our departure times. It was 9.30 this morning. Still we reached our destiny, Damman on the Arabian sea, at 16.:30 hrs. It was only a 569 km drive. The border crossings were not too much of a problem. Based on Mark’s experience I immediately filled in the forms at the UAE departures and got the stamps. The customs officer could however not find Jamaliah’s and the boy’s name in the system as an entry and spent a long time re-entering them. At the Saudi border things went even smother. Except for the cursory luggage check we did not even have to get out of the car for the passport, costumes’ and car insurance. Only changing money took a bit of time. The drive was uneventful and the road not too bad. We only struggled to get through Hofuf. The car navigation system showed a road but I think it was removed (like we saw elsewhere). We were directed all through the town and its suburbs. Jamaliah’s Arabic script reading capabilities saved the day, because there were only limited signs in the English script. Most of the way was driving through a flat desert with no vegetation till Hofuf, which is a large oasis. From there to Damman is also a bit more interesting and there were some eroded carbonate rock faces similar to the ones in the Huquf in Oman. Thanks to the car navigation system we made it to the local Cornish and found a nice little Hotel/suit for a reasonable price. Breakfast was taken at a local truck stop before the SA border. The lunch stop did not work out to well because Jamaliah had to stay in the car. So we bought some coke’s and tea and had briskets in the car.

Rudy

We are a family of 4. Rudy Welling was a Principal Production Technologist with Shell/NAM's offshore team. He first went on sabbatical from April 2014 to April 2016. In that period he made a return trip to Vladivostok with his wife, Jamaliah, in camper Passepartout. This was followed by trips to New Zealand and Spain. In April 2016 Rudy re-joined NAM/Shell again in Assen for a year and then retired in May 2017 after 37 years with Shell. He and his family have spent some 21 years in various Shell locations around the world (NL, UK, Brunei, NL, USA, Nigeria, Oman, NL). Jamaliah Jaja is the Manager of the house and comes from Brunei. Anton (1993) studies Business IT in Groningen Bernard (1994) studies Mechatronics also in Groningen Both boys still live at home, but will have to run the household on their own when we start our trip. Our previous trip by car (Volkswagen Passat Station) was from Oman to Holland in 2007. Rudi's great plan is to travel with his wife in a camper around the world. The trips will be in steps. The first is from Amsterdam to Vladivostok. De second from Tierra Del Fuego in Argentina over the PANAM highway to Prudo Bay in Alaska. Australia and New Zealand will be separate side trips and Africa will either be done out and back from Amsterdam or just from the Cap to Amsterdam. Now as K/O of Rudi's retirement we are making this second step on a journey around the world. We hope you will enjoy our story Rudy & Jamaliah
