We drove over a lot of secondary roads in the direction of Biysk. We did not want to go via the larger cities. In general the roads were good. Not always with tarmac but well maintained. The country side was not that interesting, large rolling fields of grain, grass or something else. The villages were small lying in the valleys often along a stream. In general they looked more prosperous than in Kazakhstan. .Shops are still the old fashioned style without shop window. In the few larger towns there were bigger supermarkets where we could find a cash point and stock up. Outside of Biysk on the way to the actual Altay mountains we turned off the road towards a lake (again). Here there was a lot of day recreation area and some minor facilities. Not the ideal spot but at least Jamaliah feels a bit safer.
