We traveled though 12 countries on our way across the mighty Eurasian continent. It took 132 days to travel the 41,000 km.

The Polish cities of Gdansk and Warsaw were an eyeopener. The old silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara are fantastic with their large decorated Medressa (schools). The Pamir Mountains (Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan) are an adventure to drive through especially if the passes have just been opened. East Kazachstan has the most hospitable people we met. Mongolia is a country were everybody treks around and camps along streams and lakes. Russia is so vast. The countryside is beautiful (especially lake Baykal) but access is limited to the cities with St Petersburg, Moscow, Susdal, Tobolsk, Tomsk, Ulan-Ude and Vladivostok being the highlights. The places for us to go back to are Mongolia and the regions we could not visit ie the Altai and Tuva. If we were to do it again we would have spent some more time in Mongolia and defiantly driven the 13,000 km back from Vladivostok slower (now 26 days) to enjoy the country side and cities a bit more.

When we got back the camper was overhauled. The steering mechanism was wobbly and needed some new bearings etc. One of the Sheikel shock absorbers was leaking and replaced under guarantee. A second spare tyre was installed on the metal rack on the back of the camper together with a much smaller aluminium storage box, which hopefully will hold up on the next washboard roads. Further more metal mosquito screens were purchased to fit in the windows so Jamaliah will feel safer and have fresh air.

With Rudy sleeping on the top bed and Jamaliah on the couch at the bottom we bought an extra mattress for her to make the bed more comfortable. The lower bench was also shifted forward a bit so that folding chairs and table can be stored behind it.
Passepartout is now ready for the next trip. This will be in June/July when a New Zealand couple will use her while we use their camper in New Zealand in March and April 2015.

For those of you planning a similar trip here are some statistics:
Total km 41.164 in 132 days
Diesel 3968 L = 9.64 L/100 km
Diesel cost €0,072 / km
Car repair €0,053 / km
Daily living cost €32 for 2
Average hotel cost €68 (8 nights in total)
Visa cost €1,563 for 2 people

If you need more information please do not hesitate to ask (via reaction) we are happy to help like we have also received help in planning this trip.
Happy traveling!

    Willem-A.:

    Goeie morgen,

    Alvast dank,
    Willem-A. Hameeuw

    Rudy WF Welling:

    Willem,

Rudy

We are a family of 4. Rudy Welling was a Principal Production Technologist with Shell/NAM's offshore team. He first went on sabbatical from April 2014 to April 2016. In that period he made a return trip to Vladivostok with his wife, Jamaliah, in camper Passepartout. This was followed by trips to New Zealand and Spain. In April 2016 Rudy re-joined NAM/Shell again in Assen for a year and then retired in May 2017 after 37 years with Shell. He and his family have spent some 21 years in various Shell locations around the world (NL, UK, Brunei, NL, USA, Nigeria, Oman, NL). Jamaliah Jaja is the Manager of the house and comes from Brunei. Anton (1993) studies Business IT in Groningen Bernard (1994) studies Mechatronics also in Groningen Both boys still live at home, but will have to run the household on their own when we start our trip. Our previous trip by car (Volkswagen Passat Station) was from Oman to Holland in 2007. Rudi's great plan is to travel with his wife in a camper around the world. The trips will be in steps. The first is from Amsterdam to Vladivostok. De second from Tierra Del Fuego in Argentina over the PANAM highway to Prudo Bay in Alaska. Australia and New Zealand will be separate side trips and Africa will either be done out and back from Amsterdam or just from the Cap to Amsterdam. Now as K/O of Rudi's retirement we are making this second step on a journey around the world. We hope you will enjoy our story Rudy & Jamaliah
